Homemade Mac & Cheese

As the holidays approach, it's time to indulge in cozy, comforting meals that bring everyone together. This homemade gourmet mac and cheese will elevate your festive gatherings with its creamy, cheesy goodness and rich flavors. Whether you're serving it as a side or making it the main event, this dish is sure to please. Here's a simple recipe to make it from scratch.


Ingredients:

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni

  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder

  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs (optional)


Instructions:


  1. Cook the Pasta

    Cook the macaroni according to the package instructions, then drain and set aside.


  2. Make the Roux

    In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it forms a smooth paste.


  3. Add Milk and Spices

    Gradually whisk in the milk to avoid lumps, then season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and mustard powder. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens.


  4. Add Cheese

    Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar and Gruyère cheeses until melted and smooth.


  5. Combine Pasta and Sauce

    Stir the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until well coated.


  6. Optional Breadcrumb Topping

    If you like a crispy topping, sprinkle panko breadcrumbs over the mac and cheese and bake at 350°F for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.


  7. Serve and Enjoy!

    Serve this rich and creamy mac and cheese as a perfect holiday side dish, or enjoy it as the main course!
